What are "Inside/Out" Groups?
One of the primary ways of connecting into the life of the student ministry at FLBC is by serving. Starting this Fall we will begin something called "Inside/Out" groups. These groups are ministry groups made up of mostly students who will serve together and use the talents and time God has given them to love others and share Christ.
In the beginning we will start with 4 main groups.
Prayer Team - Scripture is clear that apart from Christ we can do nothing. The purpose of this group is very simply to pray. This group will meet each Wednesday night and pray for numerous things including, unity, lost friends, that the gospel would be proclaimed clearly and powerfully, and mostly that God would be glorified.
Missions (Projects) Team - The Mission Team will assist in the carrying out of various mission and service projects. This will include projects such as helping with the “Adopt-a-Village” project, community projects, and various opportunities of service within the church family.
Tech Crew - The main purpose for this group will be assisting in the audio and visual aspects of various student ministry events. This includes assisting with the sound board, power point, media shout, being responsible for the speakers, sound equipment, and lights.
Welcome Team - The purpose of the “welcome team” is to provide a welcoming and inviting environment for those who are coming to a student ministry event. They will assist in two main areas: Greeting and Information.
Greeting: The members of the welcome team will greet everyone coming through the doors and will especially greet any first time visitors.
Information: The members will also share and pass out any information about upcoming events and answer any questions about the student ministry or a student ministry event.
These groups give you the opportunity to use the gifts God has given you and begin to start looking for a place to serve instead of waiting around to be served. Do not be afraid to join up and start being a part of what God is doing at First Lockhart Baptist Church.
Sign ups are in the Connection Center.

Camp Update: Thursday

Well it is Thursday and our last day of camp. Tomorrow morning we eat breakfast, pack up and head back towards the great nation of Texas. Thursday's theme is GO. This could be used a lot of ways. Go home. Go to sleep. Go to the beach. Go...wherever. But today the theme pints to going with a purpose. GO with a message. With news. Good news. What God has done in our lives. What God has done at camp. What God is doing now in the world with the "immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe"
Last night many of our students responded in some way to the message. Today I will be talking with them and following up on their responses so that we can be prepared going home. So that we can go home and rejoice with our families. So that we can go home and connect with our church family and learn to walk with Christ.
As I type it is raining pretty hard. Has been most of the week off and on. A couple of the cottages are flooding slightly. The cottages that FLBC students are holding up though. It could let up and we could go to the beach this afternoon and enjoy the sand and surf. Yesterday the waves were huge and we had double red flags up. So that means do not get in the water or as the beach patrol told us, "It is illegal to get in the water. We will prosecute." Thanks for the warning. Despite the rain the students are having a blast. And even at times because of the rain.

The Big Picture: God changes hearts and makes it rain even on sandy beaches. He is to be glorified for both. And hopefully our students will leave tomorrow morning with thoughts of a Big, loving God who has come to rescue and redeem them. And whether rain or shine God is to be praised.

Walking in the Light

Have you ever walked in complete darkness? I mean when its really dark. Maybe in a cave deep below ground or in a back room shielded from any outside light.
It's really hard to imagine. We live in a world full of light. Even after the sun goes down we turn the electricity on and are surrounded by light.
During Jesus' time this was not the case. When it got dark...it got really dark. They lived in a world without electric lights. And walking at night could be really dangerous. This is the context for a short parable Jesus tells the disciples in John 11:9-10.
Jesus tells the disciples that they are going back to Judea to visit Lazarus who was sick and the disciples were not real happy about this because there was some violent opposition along the way to Judea. Then we read this...
The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again? ”Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
What is Jesus saying? Jesus is talking about walking in the light. In Bible terminology this is a metaphor for doing God's will. The person who walks in the light "does not stumble." You cannot be wrong if you follow the will of God.
In contrast, not doing God's will is equivalent to walking at night. And remember what is was like for them to walk in the dark. Walking along a path at night could be dangerous and you were more likely to stumble. If you decide to not do God's will you are far more likely to stumble.
Jesus' was perfectly obedient on our behalf. He was headed to the cross and every step meant opposition. But he obeyed. Even when it was hard. Even when it meant opposition. He trusted his father and walked in the light.
Walk in the light today. You can't go wrong.

Dear Miley Cyrus: an Open Letter

Recently Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana did an interview about her faith in Jesus Christ. Some of her comments sound much like what a typical teenager in America would say about their Christianity when they really don't know what they are talking about.
Here is an excpert:
When asked if it was hard to be openly Christian in Hollywood Miley answers this way:
"People are always looking for you to do something that is non-Christian,” she answers. “But it’s like, ‘Dude, Christians don’t live in the dark.’ I have to participate in life. If I wear something revealing, they go, ‘Well, that’s not Christian.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to go to hell because I’m wearing a pair of really short white shorts.’ Suddenly I’m a slut. That’s so old-school."
Old-school. I love that one. I hear it often, and it always makes me wonder, if living like a Christian is old-school, why call yourself one at all? Why even mention Christ's name, since He's definitely old-school. 2,000 years old school for that matter. Christianity itself is completely old-school, so why even bother? This is a really good example of someone who doesn't understand what Christian living is supposed to look like. The whole short-shorts thing is about modesty, and not giving anyone a reason to lust after you in their minds and hearts. So many people don't see it this way though. The shorts are cute, I like them, I like the way they look on me, I'm wearing them and if you have a problem with it, that's YOUR problem, not mine. That's the attitude right there, and I know it well since it used to be my attitude all the time about the way I dressed. The thing is, it's a completely anti-Christian attitude. Are we supposed to care about not giving other people a reason to stumble, as much as it's within our ability to do that? Yes, we are. Are we supposed to be 100% self-focused and self-serving? No, we are not. Jesus Himself could have taken the same attitude in the garden when He said "if there be any other way, take this cup from me". He could have said "I'm not going to that cross, I'm leaving and going elsewhere and if you don't like it that's YOUR problem, not mine." As we all know, that isn't what He did. He fully and completely and entirely gave up His own human desire and gave of Himself. Bottom line is simply this: do you dress to show off your body to others, or do you dress to please the Lord? That may not be a question a young pop star wants to answer, straight up. It requires taking Christianity seriously, and that's not always an easy thing to do.
Here is the rest:

Happy Beyond Description

In 1851 a group of British missionaries to Tierra del Fuego was forced to winter in the bitter cold while they waited for their supply ship to arrive. It came too late. They all died of cold and starvation. On Good Friday, April 18th, Richard Williams, a surgeon and Methodist lay preacher, wrote in his journal, “Poor and weak though we are, our abode is a very Bethel to our souls [Genesis 28:10-19], and God we feel and know is here.” On Wednesday, May 7th, he wrote, “Should anything prevent my ever adding to this, let all my beloved ones at home rest assured that I was happy beyond description when I wrote these lines and would not have changed situations with any man living.”
“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” John 14:23

Tips for Effective Prayer
The Resurgence Blog had some good thoughts on prayer. Here are some of the thoughts:
Keep Praying.
The Puritans talked about ‘praying, until you pray.’ That is a helpful expression. It can, and will, become a delight. If you don’t believe me, read Psalm 16. Prioritise prayer, make a plan, put it in your diary, and keep the appointment. Meaning to do something changes nothing: “The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing...” (Prov. 13:4) and don’t just leave it to “the Spirit to lead you.” My experience is that he doesn’t, or not in the way I want him to anyway.
Tips for Effective Prayer
* Set the right goals. Make them challenging enough to motivate you, but still doable.
* Get to prayer meetings. You’ll learn a lot.
* Learn what distracts you and outplay them.
* Keep close to a pencil and paper. Make notes if any thought keeps stealing your focus.
* Be around people who know how to pray and ask to join them. That can be the most instructive thing of all.
* Be accountable to someone. Tell them to ask you how your prayer life is regularly. Encourage them to abuse you when you don’t pray!
Resist discouragement—It’s from the devil. Your Father loves you. And resist pride. Remember you come to God because you need him, not to impress him or anyone else. He is already perfectly impressed with his Son and, therefore with you, whether you pray or not.
